PHUONG MY KICKS OFF NEW YORK FASHION WEEK
by Kristen Irby, Fashion Editor, ASTONISH Magazine
Held at the posh Manhattan hotspot Gansevoort Park Avenue Hotel, the launch event for ASTONISH Magazine was centered around a glorious presentation of designer Phuong My, whose Spring/Summer 2012 Collection befittingly inspired awe and wonder. Phuong My’s construction skills and her mastery of manipulating shapes was evident in the grouping of her couture evening gowns. The use of 3-D structure and precise boning to create bubbling shapes, a modern rendition of dresses worn by the Infanta in paintings by the Renaissance master Diego Velazquez, was a sight to behold. Cutout rose shapes further enhanced the femininity and richness of this collection. Dynamic embellishments such as extended collars, asymmetry, contrasting color and a sexy use of gentle lace made the garments accessible for fashion innovators and novices alike.
